Holistic Health & Healing
Holistic healing is an ancient science over 5000 years old which originated and dates back to India and China. This style of healing practice is based on healthy lifestyles in union with nature. This holistic method of healing became popular in the US in the early 70’s, and has become more popular as the study of health of the whole being has been studied better understanding how it is related to treatment.
The main premise or base of Holistic health is that there are many contributing factors to a person’s well being. Holistic healing takes these factors into account when assessing a beings overall health, as they feel these things are all connected. For example if someone is in a very stressful profession or environment, rather then just simply treating the disorder with a simple pill, they now look at the lifestyle and take it into consideration when making their recommendations. They now will make mention to the lifestyle changes that can increase or exacerbate the conditions rather then solely treating the symptom. This approach has been successful in helping patients better identify their lifestyle that can better aid in coping with the ailment to lessen it and provide lifestyle modifications to better treat the ailment.
Holistic health has become more widely accepted recently with traditional medicine in that they are now considering the needs of the patient including physical, social and mental aspects when treating looking at the the whole rather then only the problem.
The idea of holism is not a new concept and was acknowledged by many philosophers of the past including Aristotle, Socrates, and Jan Christiaan Smuts, who all believed that the whole should be taken into account rather then simply viewing each part individually. This concept as you see has been evolving over time and is now more based on viewing the body as one complex machine with many cogs in it that make it work successfully.
